I’m a freelance photojournalist currently living in the north of England. I'm fascinated by the oddities around us and how we live in our predominantly urban world.

Out & about - Please ring for entry...

sb009417

At the entrance to Upper Chapel on Surrey Street in Sheffield I found this hurriedly scribbled instruction for visitors.

                 The sticky-note reads;
"Bell out of order callers please use brass bell.
                                                                                     Thank you"

All I could think of was my Grandfather saying "They don't make stuff to last these days."

Out & about - Beside the Sheffield Canal

sb009015

Beside the Sheffield Canal, just before the Bernard Road bridge a forgotten picnic site behind an engineering workshop is gradually enshrouded by woodland. When I was a child in the twentieth century this entire canal was hemmed in by heavy industry. The Sheffield Canal was a typical inner city canal of it's day in the north of England.

Now in the twenty-first century the mass of those heavy industries are gone, the buildings stand as mere abandoned shells or are razed to the ground. Some few industrial businesses survive and the majority of the canal traffic is pleasure boats. The Sheffield Canal remains a typical inner city canal of it's day in the north of England.

Street art - On Backfields, Sheffield

sb009175 Graffiti on graffiti; Backfields, Sheffield

                               "So nat'ralists observe, a flea
Hath smaller fleas that on him prey,
And these have smaller fleas that bite 'em,
                               And so proceed ad infinitum."

Remebrance - Remember, and be grateful

sb008987
Without the efforts of the people commemorated every year in November I would not be able to follow my craft as I do now. In fact I would almost certainly never have had the chance to be born.

I continue to remember and thank them.

Weekly Update 4 November 2011

Sheffield street market

sb008970
Sheffield has regular and popular street markets, a wonderful source of fine cheese, cured meats and pastries and street food. The macaroon stall is a particular favourite. At the other side of the market I spotted this splendid fellow on a cheese stall watching the passers by with their crisps and take-away burgers.

The goat's cheese was very good with bread and olives from a couple of other stalls.
